More than Chocolate Eggs: Paid Social Opportunities for Easter in the UK

One of the key seasonal shopping events of the year, Easter generated £4 billion in UK retail sales in 2016 as customers splashed out on gifting (£713 million) as well as seasonal food (£1.9 billion), and more. Close to 80 million chocolate eggs are sold across the nation each year, with Easter sales making up 10% of Britain’s annual retail spend on chocolate. In fact, 63% of UK households purchased at least one chocolate egg during March last year while over half of the population opted to enjoy traditional hot cross buns as part of the holiday celebration.

Increasingly, UK shoppers turn to digital channels when planning the festivities, with Easter shopping internet searches doubling in the three weeks leading up to last year’s event. Social media plays a significant part in preparing for the holiday and there were over 1.9 million UK searches for Easter-related content on Pinterest in 2016. Similarly, Facebook saw a 1.07x increase in associated posts last year, with 83% of Easter content on the platform shared from a mobile device.
